Plastic Surgeon Prof Piet Haers

Thin lips

Problem
Thin lips.
Solution
Lip augmentation using fat transfer or collagen injections.
Risks
Insignificant with collagen, some bruising with fat transfer.
Recovery Time
Overnight for collagen; three or four days with fat transfer.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Several months with collagen, longer with fat transfer.
£1000 to £2000.

Wrinkled Lips

Problem
Wrinkled lips and lip lines.
Solution
Chemical peels and/or dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.
Risks
Include scarring and sun discoloration, but these are minimal with the lighter peel.
Recovery Time
Depends on degree of treatment two to three weeks.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Depends on the depth and degree of treatment.
Cost
Chemical peels and/or dermabrasion, £500 to £1500; laser resurfacing, £1000 to £2000.

The Cheeks

The cheeks affect the smile more than you might imagine. Heavy jowls and sagging facial tissue pull down the corners of the mouth, giving an unhappy appearance. The nasolabial fold (the line between the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth) becomes deeper and more pronounced with age, and smiling may exaggerate this fold.
A face-lift supports the cheeks and corrects the drag on the corners of the mouth, making the smile more youthful.

Lax Cheeks, Heavy cheeks or wrinkled cheeks

Problems
Prominent nasolabial fold (sagging in the cheeks with a marked fold line at the junction of cheek from side of nostril to lip corner and chin); laxity of cheeks and skin; heavy cheeks; wrinkled cheeks.
Solutions
Face-lift (rhytidectomy); liposuction; buccal fat pad excision (for the "chubby" cheek, the buccal fat pad can be easily excised from inside the mouth, combined with a face-lift or alone).
Risks
Complications are infrequent and usually minor. They can include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that must be surgically removed), injury to nerves that Control facial muscles (rarely permanent), infection and reactions to anesthesia. Poor healing is more likely to affect smokers.
Recovery Time
Recovery is in stages. You may go back to work in two weeks, and in four weeks you'll be looking and feeling much better, with bruises fading.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Although your face will continue to age, the effects of the face-lift are everlasting. Even years later, you'll continue to look better than if you'd never had a face-lift. You may want to repeat the procedure or certain aspects of a total face-lift several times over the years. The lasting effects to a large degree depend on you; avoiding sun and stress and maintaining good health are all important.
Cost
Full face-lift, £8000 to £14,000; liposuction of cheeks, £1000 to £2000; buccal fat pad removal, £1000 to £2000.

The Nose

The nose is the face's central and most prominent feature; its contour, character and size have a considerable effect on the smile. If too large or not well shaped. it may shadow and obscure the smile. An overhanging tip of the nose can partially hide the upper lip. A nose that is too wide may appear out of proportion with the smile. Correction of the nose may completely change the smile, making it softer and more natural by improving the proportions of the entire face.

Nose too big, too long

Problems
Nose too big, too long.
Solution
Rhinoplasty (surgery to reshape the nose), which can reduce or increase the size of your nose or change its shape or angle. It may, in some cases, even help relieve some breathing problems.
Risks
Complications are infrequent and usually minor, although possibilities of infection, nosebleed or reaction to anesthesia do exist. There is also the possibility that small burst blood vessels may appear as tiny red spots on the skin's surface. These are usually minor, but may be permanent. In about one of ten cases, a second procedure may be required. Corrective surgery in these unpredictable cases is usually minor.
Recovery Time
Two to three weeks for most of the swelling and bruising. You may go back to work in seven to ten days, but limit strenuous physical activity for three weeks.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Results are permanent.
Costs
£2000 to £5000.

The Chin

The chin, like the forehead, nose and lips, contributes to the contour of both the full face and the profile.
The receding chin is more common than the protruding chin. It can be improved dramatically with a surgical implant. With chin reduction, reshaping of bone is performed surgically. In either case, correcting a poorly proportioned chin can dramatically enhance a smile by creating a proper esthetic balance to the face as a whole.

Protruding Chin

Problem
Protruding chin.
Solution
Chin reduction.
Risks
Bleeding, scarring and nerve damage.
Recovery Time
Two to three weeks if bone is involved.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Results are permanent.
Cost
£2000 to £5000

The Eyes

The most common early signs of aging appear around the eyes. Sagging upper and lower eyelids can detract from even the most attractive smile by making you look tired and old.
Tiny lines and wrinkles around the corners of the eyes also age a face. Blepharoplasty can correct these problems on the upper and/or lower eyelids. A chemical peel may enhance the surgeon's results by eliminating certain fine lines and wrinkles. The overall effect is a "freshening" of the eyes. You will appear well rested, alert and younger when you smile.

Baggy Upper and Lower Eyelids

Problem
Baggy upper and lower eyelids.
Solution
Blepharoplasty (eye-lift). Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes, features that make you look old and tired and that may interfere with vision.
Risks
Risks and complications are infrequent and usually minor. Possibilities include infection or reaction to anesthesia, double or blurred vision for a few days, temporary swelling, and a slight asymmetry in healing. Tiny whiteheads may appear following removal of stitches. Rare complications include an inability to close your eyes when you sleep. Again, these complications are rare and easily treated by a qualified surgeon.
Recovery Time
A week to ten days to go out in public. Depending your rate of healing, you may be able to conceal remaining bruises with make-up at that time. Avoid strenuous activity for three to four weeks until complete healing occurs.
Average Range of Treatment Life Expectancy
Results will give you a more alert and youthful appearance that will last for many years. For many people, these results are permanent.
Cost
Both upper and lower eyelids, £3000 to £6000; upper or lower eyelids only, £2000 to £4000.
